Everton will hope to put an end to a tumultuous week when they travel to Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday. The Toffees start this game on 27 points, two above the drop zone while Chelsea are ninth on 44 points. Chelsea are on a seven-game unbeaten run coming into this game and will hope to extend that. Their major problem has been failing to close down opponents when in winning position. The Blues have dropped points from winning positions in two of their last three games. The most recent of those was in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United. A stoppage time goal from Oliver McBurnie denied Chelsea what would have been a 13th win of the season. As they return home for this game, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be targeting a sixth unbeaten home game. They have four wins in the last five home matches, two being in the FA Cup. In seven of their last eight matches at home, Chelsea scored at least two goals. Here, they will be gunning for their first win in three meetings with Everton.
Everton suffered another blow to their season after being docked two points, putting their topflight stay in continued jeopardy. They may even find themselves in the relegation zone by the time they enter Stamford Bridge. With seven matches to play, under the prevailing circumstances, Everton have no room for error. The only advantage they have in the relegation battle is their game in hand. Four points earned in their last two league matches would have been sweeter without the bad news during the week. Sean Dyche will however still urge his charges to keep up the fight. He did guide the team to a 2-0 win over Chelsea in their first meeting this season. Everton have suffered just one defeat against Chelsea in the last four meetings but circumstances are different coming into this game. A 1-0 win over Burnley in their last game was Everton’s first victory in 11 matches in all competitions. In the league, they have just that one win in 14 matches, losing seven in the process. There hasn’t been a win in Everton’s last eight away league matches, five ending in defeats.
Everton will not be in the best shape coming into this game. A two-point penalty finds them in poor form on the pitch and this is bound to worsen things. Playing a league game away from home doesn’t help, especially facing an improving Chelsea side. Chelsea have put in good results at home recently and will be favorites here. Our prediction for Chelsea v Everton is for Chelsea to win.
