Newcastle United will be at home to take on Everton in their next Premier League game. Eighth placed Newcastle are 13 points behind the European slots while Everton are three above the relegation zone. For a side that took part in the Champions League, Newcastle United will want to make it to Europe at least. That dream seems too far for now, having managed 43 points, with nine matches to go. They however did themselves a favor with a stunning comeback to beat West Ham United 4-3 on Saturday. Braces from Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes did it for Newcastle, who trailed 3-1 at some point. It would however end sourly as Anthony Gordon was sent off late, and will not be eligible against his former employers. That win marked Newcastle’s fourth unbeaten home league game, with two wins. The one thing Newcastle will look to replicate is their scoring form at home in the league. They’ve now scored at least twice in each of their last five home league matches. However, in that run they have just one clean sheet.
Everton have failed to score in just one of their last five meetings with Newcastle United. With their hosts shaky in defence, this is an area they’ll want to exploit. They did win the reverse fixture 3-0 and will hope to seal a double here. However, they are in that form and are once again set for the relegation scrap. Everton are on 25 points after 29 matches. Their season was made worse with a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday. That defeat was facilitated by Seamus Coleman’s 90th minute own goal, keeping them winless in nine straight matches. The Toffees actually have one win in their last 16 matches – a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup in January. They have no win in 12 league matches, their last one coming in mid December. Everton’s poor run aside, the positive stat they bring is that they scored in seven of their last 10 matches. In their last five games, they failed to score just once but have no clean sheet in the five games.
The recent meetings between these two sides were high-scoring and they still come here on the back of high-scoring games. Newcastle United have been scoring a lot at home and given this form, we expect them to dominate Everton, promising another high-scoring encounter. Everton are however tough to completely shut out. They may have a few clean sheets, but rarely do they fail to score. For both teams, defence seems to be an issue. Our prediction for Newcastle United v Everton is for over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
