West Ham United host Newcastle at the London Stadium on Wednesday for this rescheduled matchday seven English Premier League fixture. The Hammers were able to secure a vital 1-0 home win over Southampton on the weekend, making it two straight victories for the East-London club following their comfortable 4-0 win over AEK Larnaca in the Conference League last week. West Ham is on a positive run of form with three wins from the last four matches across all competitions and seven points gained from the last four Premier League fixtures. Despite the uptick in form, David Moyes’ men are not out of the woods yet in regards to their league standing. West Ham are up to 14th in the table but with how tight things are in the bottom-half, only hold a one-point lead over the drop zone. The hosts do have the advantage however of having a game in hand over the teams beneath them and a win in this match would increase their buffer zone to four points.
On the other side, the Geordie-faithful will be riding high after their Newcastle team was able to secure the three points and a spot in the top three after a huge 2-0 home win over Manchester United on the weekend. There is now a three-way tie for third-place with Tottenham, Newcastle and Manchester United all on 50 points but it’s the Magpies +22 goal differential which puts them above their top four rivals. Newcastle also have a significant two games in hand advantage over Tottenham and can also cut the lead on second-place Manchester City to 11 points with a victory here. Newcastle’s Champions League push is back on after looking like they might have run out of steam just one month ago. Eddie Howe’s men responded to a previous five match winless run with three straight Premier League wins, scoring two goals in each and keeping their first clean sheet in the past nine matches.
There is a lot on the line for both clubs in this match despite finding themselves on the opposite end of the league spectrum. Newcastle will be attempting to tighten their grip on a Champions League berth while West Ham will be hoping to give themselves more breathing room from the bottom three. With both teams playing very well as of late and each coming off a hugely important three points on the weekend, it’s certainly feasible that they are each able to register a goal here. It might ultimately be difficult to separate these two teams on the scoreboard come the end of the 90 minutes but we envision this one finishing at least 1-1.
